FOL Education Programme in Ireland Friends of Londiani has its own development education programme working with schools and youth groups. In secondary schools this can form part of the CSPE Programme. A primary school education pack is currently being developed. FOL School Visits FOL has volunteers available who have worked in Kenya and would love to talk to school groups about the experience and about the work undertaken by Friends of Londiani and the communities in Kenya. CSPE Education Pack Harambee Award Harambee is a Swahili word and literally means “pulling together”. Harambee is a Kenyan tradition of community self-help activities, e.g. community work, fundraising, volunteering with clubs and groups. FOL helps secondary schools to acknowledge a final year student who exemplifies the spirit of Harambee in their school and/or community. This student is the one who thinks of others, helps his peers and plays a role in their school and/or community. In a way he/she is the reliable, considerate, “always there” team player who aims to help other people. The Award itself is a wooden carving from Kenya and will be presented as an annual award at the end of the school year. A small Africa memento will also be presented for the student to keep. Students can nominate themselves or be nominated by a fellow student or a teacher. The first Harambee Award was presented in Colaiste Muire, Cobh, Co. Cork in 2006. In 2007 a Harambee Award was presented to Ciaran Creighton in Kilinarden Community School, Tallaght, Dublin. |
